Editorial: Rhetoric doesn't match reality in the N.C. legislature
Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 -- We need our public schools, community college, and university systems to work together to meet the demands of a 21st-century economy. Berger's sloganeering and failed leadership are roadblocks on that path. -

PAUL KRUGMAN: Republicans and debt: 'Blackmailers without a cause'
Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 -- The federal government is basically an insurance company with an army. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the military dominate spending and it's impossible to do much about deficits unless you either raise taxes -- which is obviously not part of the GOP playbook -- or make major cuts to these programs. -

Editorial: Truth, taxes and Sen. Budd's fib
Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023 -- Sen Ted Budd's constituents deserve a representative who deals with them truthfully, provides them with honest information and makes sure they're treated fairly. That's not too much to ask and shouldn't be a challenge for Budd to fulfill. -

Editorial: From the bad of a few cops, do more to make good cops better
Monday, Jan. 30, 2023 -- What cities like Memphis, communities in North Carolina need is to REFUND the police. We want to REFUND law enforcement that hires more GOOD individuals who care about their communities, are dedicated public servants devoted to protect and defend their neighbors and also understand the responsibilities and trust that comes with their jobs. -

Editorial: Truitt needs to stand WITH students and stand UP TO legislators
Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023 -- North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt seems more concerned with appeasing the Republican partisans who rule the state legislature than making sure every school child has access to a quality public education and their schools and teachers have the resources needed to do it. -

Editorial: Santos' absence of ethics lowers all in Congress. He must go
Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023 -- George Santos demeans Congress and the nation every day he remains in office. The people of his congressional district, the U.S. House and our country deserve better and shouldn't have to tolerate his abusive presence. -

Editorial: Speaker Tim Moore's power grab
Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023 -- Speaker Tim Moore's effort to jettison the rules provision his fellow Republicans initiated in 2011 is a repudiation of the legacy that put him in power and an affront to the representative government every North Carolina citizen expects. -

Editorial: Delegation in Washington gains diversity but loses clout and experience
Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023 -- It is a stark and dramatically different delegation representing North Carolina in Congress now than any time since the dawn of the current millennium. The current delegation starting service Tuesday - two Republicans in the U.S. Senate and a House delegation of seven Republicans and seven Democrats - is likely as diverse as has ever served in Washington. But with the departures of Republican Sen. Richard Burr along with Democratic Reps. G.K. Butterfield and David Price, the depth of experience, knowledge and leadership is significantly diminished. -

Editorial: Omnibus bill includes millions to help N.C. with items even GOP wanted
Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023 -- No legislation is ever perfect. But in this omnibus bill North Carolina taxpayers are seeing their dollars come home: helping our military preparedness, the people and families who serve our nation and our veterans; boosting local economies; fighting hunger; improving community health, housing, public education and the environment; and strengthening law enforcement and public safety. -

Editorial: Assure the right TO A LIFE in North Carolina
Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022 -- It is only common sense, and legislators should insist, that before any efforts are initiated to further limit women's' access to abortion services are enacted, North Carolina should expand Medicaid as well as other support to help assure healthy outcomes to pregnancies for women and their babies. -

Editorial: Act honestly. Enact voter ID laws that don't hurt access to the polls
Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022 -- Act honestly. Stop looking to discriminate against some voters because of their race, age, economic status, disability or neighborhood. Enact a common-sense law that allows for a variety of forms of photo identification that help people vote honestly, not hinder their access to the polls. -

Editorial: Another year without Medicaid expansion. Lives still at risk
Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022 -- How costly is it that state legislative leaders continue to block Medicaid expansion to North Carolinians in need of access to medical care? Money that probably otherwise would be used by the American Cancer Society to find cures to cancer is now being directed to advertising "urging lawmakers to expand Medicaid" to "more than 600,000 veterans, farmers and cancer patients." -

Editorial: Legislators are not dictators. U.S. Supreme Court must reinforce it
Friday, Dec. 9, 2022 -- The U.S. Constitution delegates to the "legislature" the job of redistricting. It is the State Constitution that gives the General Assembly the authority to deal with the matter. Most significantly the State Constitution - the voice and authority of the people -- gives our courts the job of examining the work of the legislature. -

Editorial: Election districts must reflect North Carolina, not political leadership
Monday, Dec, 5, 2022 -- North Carolinians deserve elected representatives who reflect them, their priorities and communities - not those who parrot and owe allegiance to Phil Berger and Tim Moore. -

Editorial: Who will Ted Budd really be working for in the U.S. Senate?
Friday, Dec. 2, 2022 -- When Republican Ted Budd takes his seat in the United States Senate next month who will he be representing? If you say North Carolina, don't bet on it. -
CBC OPINION
Editorial: A legislature answerable to no one?
Is it solely the province of the legislature to define what is quality education? No one but the legislature can determine what is needed - if anything - to meet our state Constitution's mandate and it is only for the legislature to delineate that definition. What recourse is there for anyone who might contend the state isn't meeting its Constitutional obligation or that the legislature is responsible? -

Editorial: Legislature's emails are public records, belong to the people, must be maintained
Monday, Nov. 28, 2022 -- Emails don't belong to Senate leader Phil Berger, House Speaker Tim Moore or Legislative Services Director Paul Coble. The fact that many legislative emails are by law hidden from disclosure, still they are very much PUBLIC records. They are the property of the people. -
CBC OPINION
Editorial: GOP bragging rings hollow without Medicaid expansion
Monday, Nov. 21, 2022 -- If state Senate leader Phil Berger believes he can take credit for all the advances the state has made - he too must take responsibility for the devastation that has befallen families because they haven't been able to get the critical - and often life-saving - health care they've needed. Expand Medicaid now - no strings attached. Maybe the next time Berger takes to bragging, he won't need to leave "health" off his list. -

Editorial: Can justice in N.C. still be independent? It must!
Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022 -- What kind of court is it that can make a determination and then have no authority to enforce corrective action? What kind of justice is there when there is an assumption that judges are already predisposed to certain positions or biases before even hearing arguments or determining facts? -

Editorial: Cooper makes a much-needed move to fix UNC System's instability and patronage
Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022 -- Coming up with ways to make those who lead the UNC System and its campuses more representative of the state and its needs is an important and timely mission. Rather than seeing it as a threat to legislative leaders' power, Sen. Phil Berger and others should embrace Gov. Roy Cooper's proposal. It will work to help assure North Carolina can maintain a top-notch system of public higher education.
